Radical Acceptance | Tara Brach

  • Whenever we reject a part of our being we reinforce our fundamental (mistaken) unworthiness
  • As we strive to avoid the shadow we solidify our identity as a fearful, deficient, shameful self
  • Jung: the unfaced and unfelt parts of our psyche are the source of all neurosis and suffering
  • Querencia: the pause that allows a bull during a bullfight to regain strength and power; when the bull is reactive and enraged, he is within the bullfighter’s control
    • During his querencia, he reclaims his strength and that is when he truly becomes dangerous
    • A pause when one comes home to oneself, in an intimate and honest way
  • Welcome emotions as friends – they are simply biological indicators that help us process our experiences
    • Signals, nothing more, nothing less
  • Becoming conscious of the suffering we are feeling reconnects us to our hearts
    • It’s freeing to recognize that we are suffering – removes judgment and allows us to see ourselves with compassion
  • Genuine freedom comes when we feel belonging within ourselves
  • Anxiety narrows your focus and prevents you from your intuition and warmth both for yourself and for others
  • “Compassion means to be with, feel with, suffer with.”
  • An awakened heart is the full realization of our being
    • We feel most who we are when we feel connected to others and the world around us – when our hearts are open, generous, full of love

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

Some momentary awareness

comes as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!…

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

meet them at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.
